Psychology of Pain
It is commonly known that stress is a normal part of our lives. Just about anything can bring it about, and it can affect almost everything about us. It has also been shown that our experience of stress, especially when we consider our stress to be overwhelming, can cause our physical sensations, such as pain, to become even more intense and, at times, completely debilitating.
With this in mind, chronic pain programs have begun to incorporate mental health services into their treatment programs in order to help patients learn how to best cope with their stress. The work that psychologists and patients do together can allow someone to still experience stress, but keep it from intensifying their pain and from letting it ruin their lives.
This is achieved by focusing on the importance of your thoughts and how you are thinking about your stressors. More importantly, we take the time to look at how you are thinking about your pain.
